I just got my ABS info in the mail. If you didn't know, (I didn't): You need to update your account information to tell the ABS team where to get your stuff sent to. Anyway I got the magazine and the International JS of the year is Neels Van Den Berg. Of course he made fluted Quillon dagger (Required MS) knife. Anyway watch his intro video, if it doesn't remind you why you are a blacksmith then dang.

Very interesting topic, and super relevant to newer makers - thanks for bringing it up, Michael!

I have noticed that all of the suggestions so far have been available on youtube, and mine will not be.  That said, the price is very reasonable and it is something I have come back to time and again as I forge and finish blades.

During the pandemic ABS master smith Burt Foster ( https://burtfoster.com)   put out three downloadable instruction videos for purchase on his website - Basic Blade Forging, Rough Blade Grinding and Basic Heat Treating. I purchased them all and go back to them over and over as I refine my skills and process.

There are lots of good instructional videos (including more than a few excellent ones right here in the ABS Store) out there, just wanted to add my $0.02 to the conversation.

 Steven Shipley,

To begin I agree with helping folks out, and I think its the proper area for progression. Learning from an expert will exponentially increase your abilities. The link you sent did not work, so I put a link to his classes here, but I don't see anything on there about the non (in-person classes). Do you have a link? https://burtfoster.com/collections/classes

That being said, I threw up YouTube because as you are getting started what I have found is: "Honey I spent all our money on tools". Knife making isn't cheap. I saw a gentlemen on the forum saying that he was trying to save money on knives by taking up making as a hobby. I had to have a good laugh about that. That being said here are the links to some things I think would be a good order to get these in. I started with Judging standards because your goal should be design, and working towards certification approved blades and the skills to do that.

1. ABS Judging Standards - https://www.americanbladesmith.org/product/dvd-abs-judging-standards/

2. The Making of a Knife by Bill Moran (The creator of ABS)- https://www.americanbladesmith.org/product/dvd-the-making-of-a-knife-by-bill-moran/

Just started reading into a conversation about "Take-down" knives. No idea what that meant, but if you don't know you can probably guess. It means you could take it apart yourself and put it back together (Most MS recommend you don't take their products apart because you might not put back together properly). Anyway looked on YouTube and good videos from Karl Andersen

14. Walter Sorrells - I know FIF gets a lot of hate thrown its way, but on occasion it shows examples of some great teachers in the shop / equipment / blacksmith / and knife community. I think this guy has some great videos on the general scope of what things cost, how they work, and if its worth your investment.
