I have tried asking around, but I haven't seen anything specific on this. I am not able to drag photos directly over into a post, they only show under attached files. I was originally told that the file needed to be smaller than 1MB, but I wanted to see what advice folks had:
1) What file size do photos need to be?
2) What file type do photos need to be?
3) How do you drag photos visibly into a post?
4) I heard that downloading a web profile can post photos of larger size directly without having to attach. Does that work?

The ABS "Please Read" page says "under 1MB in size". Does that answer question number one?
I use a photo hosting site - IMGUR - to place my photos in my posts. I convert them all to JPEG files before uploading them to IMGUR.
Dragging is not an option.
I appreciate the response. I have been reading through a lot of posts and I can't remember where I saw someone say that the page had been updated for larger size, but it doesn't matter because after reading your information and digging into it, you are the "Photo czar" - guy in charge so I hope I compiled the information thoroughly so I can find it later:
In the ABS Board Guidelines: "For images within posts there are image posting size rules in effect to keep the image uploads at 1,000 x 1,000 pixels or less and under 500k in file size and for Galleryimages keep the image uploads at 600x480 pixels or less and under 50k in file size."

Resizing and editing photos just became easy and free: https://pixlr.com/
Enter the site by clicking the two chevrons at the bottom of the page.
Choose the Editor and you have a pretty serious photo editing package at your finger tips.
To resize for this site, the photo needs to be a maimum of 1000 pixels in each dimension.
Follow these steps:
- Open Image from your computer. A window opens for you to browse your files and select the photo.
- On the upper menu, choose Image and Image Size. A small window opens showing the width and height of your photo.
- Click on the larger of the two numbers (width or height) and change it to 1000.
- Click OK. The image automatically adjusts the other dimension to preserve proportions.
- Click the X to close. A small window opens offering you the chance to save the photo before closing. Click Yes.
- Another window opens, Change the name (or it will replace the original. I usually just add a number) and click OK.
- A window opens for you to choose the file location to save to. IMPORTANT: Make sure the File Type says JPEG or you will need to add .jpg to the photo name.
Now you can upload a resized photo that works for this site.

he attached tutorial provides information on how to edit photos for any application on the internet; whether it be posting to forum threads, uploading to your web site or attaching to emails. It begins with an explanation of why photos must be edited for the internet, followed by a photo editing demonstration. Also provided is an explanation of how to check the size of your photos after loading them to the internet.
At the bottom of the tutorial is an expanded explanation of the ABS Forum Guidelines for posting photographs in the ABS Forum. Please make sure that you understand the size limits on each type of image before loading your photos to the forum.
If you need help with editing your photos or with loading them to the forum, do not hesitate to contact the Forum Moderators for assistance.

Editing Photos for the Web ABS.pdf
I make this post as a simple reminder to all of the existing members, and as a reference to all new incoming members.
We have. for a long time, had established photo sizes for use in the forums and in the individual galleries.
I almost have a daily task of informing someone to remove and re-size their photos.
At the top of your screen, just under the SEARCH button is a tab titled "ABS Board Guidelines". I suggest anyone who has not done so, please read these guidelines.
The third paragraph is this: " For images within posts there are image posting size rules in effect to keep the image uploads at 1,000 x 1,000 pixels or less and under 500k in file size and for Gallery images keep the image uploads at 600x480 pixels or less and under 50k in file size."
I politely ask all of our members to read and follow these rules. They are in effect for one simple reason - to save space on the web site server.
When over-sized photos are uploaded, the server software re-sizes the photos for display on the forum, but the ORIGINAL photo is still on the server occupying excessive space.
I can easily just delete the photos from the posts, but that would be at least a little rude - right? So.......I send messages to the member to re-size the photo and often get no response at all.
Please either set your phones/cameras to lower resolutions or learn to re-szie your photos to stay within these limitations.
Thanks - very much.

OK - this is a relatively new ABS web site platform.
Thought that is true, the earlier forum CONTENT moved over from the previous one. That's why you still see those posts.
On this new forum there are new guidelines for pictures. On the page where you enter the forum is this quote:
"The image posting size guidelines specify that you keep the image uploads under 1 Mb in size. Our ABS Forum moderator team reserves the right to remove any content that violates these standards of professionalism or the upload size limits."
