2012 Mastersmith Collaboration Knife of the Year
Master Smiths Kyle Royer, Adam DesRosiers, and Tommy Gann made this outstanding knife to follow in the tradition of new Mastersmiths making and donating a collaboration knife for the benefit of the American Bladesmith Society. Tommy, Adam, and Kyle were the only candidates to test for the MS rating last year. They all passed and immediately after passing the test someone mentioned how each year it is traditional for the new Masters to do such a collaboration knife and so they decided to work together and make this knife.
The blade is 11†long, 2 ¼†wide and nearly a whopping 3/8†thick! The blade is forged in a ten bar twist pattern which Adam calls the Merovingian pattern , and it has also been parkerized. The blade was forged, ground, heat treated, hand finished, etched and parkerized by Adam DesRosiers, MS.
The fittings are forged from 1080 and 15N20 in tight Turkish twist pattern. The forging of the damascus for the fittings, rough shaping of the frame, guard sculpting and hand polishing of the guard was done by Kyle Royer, MS.
The handle is 5 ½†long which gives an overall length of 16 ½†to this knife. The “Birds Beak†style handle is made from Ebony featuring domed stainless steel pins and checkering. The liners are of stainless steel and they have been coined. The handle assembly, shaping, hand finishing, coining, checkering and pinning were all done by Tommy Gann, MS.
This knife also comes with a fine, tooled leather sheath made and donated by Bob Bobbitt, a saddle maker and leather craftsman who lives near Tommy Gann in TX.
Caleb Royer of Caleb Royer Studio took the delightful picture of this knife.

That sheath and knife are BEAUTIFUL. And the photography is just as good.
I love collaboration knives because it's cool to think that they have traveled from here to there with great Master Smiths all adding they're years of skill and work to it, till it finally becomes a top class beautiful knife.
