I am going for a civil war era bowie combined with my own personal aesthetic design and am wondering if there are any tweaks I should. the reason I chose a civil war era bowie design is that was when Mary Edwards Walker M.D. the only woman so far to earn th0e Medal of Honor served. She was forced at first to serve as a nurse despite being a qualified surgeon. Then Florence Nightingale the world's most famous nurse, founder of modern nursing and the first recipient of the Royal Red Cross the UK's highest honor for military nursing. My cousin Jamie she reminds me a bit of Nurse Nightingale.

I plan to make this blade using a canister Damascus bullet that has a filler of 3 different kinds of disposable carbon steel scalpel heads which etch very dark and so I will be using powdered 4600KC as the filler. I am also thinking of using a canister of pure iron powder and the scalpels to make the guard instead of 316 stainless steel I originally planned to make the guard from as it would be more beautiful and I want the blade to be beautiful to help balance out bad things she has to witness in her job. however, I have yet to design the fittings.

Is there a particular knife you are using for inspiration?

I am certainly no historian, but when it comes to knives of early 19th century America, I typically don't think about such short bevels. That drawing reminds me more of a Vietnam era K-BAR.

Gary Mulkey would be a good person to ask. He has a depth of knowledge about that era of knifemaking.

Thanks, I will take a look at some historic bowies (visual encyclopedias are great for this) and alter the design a bit and however not sure which Gary Mulkey I should ask as there are 4 on FB and I am not comfortable cold messaging 4 people. I do want to make sure I have enough room to engrave the two names on.

Gary is a member of this forum. At the top of your screen, you will see a series of tabs after: American Bladesmith Society (Forums, Members, Calendar, Gallery)

Click Members. A list appears with an alphabetical filter along the top. Click G and scroll down until you locate Gary Mulkey. Click his name and you will go to his profile page.

In the upper left corner, you will see "send me a message". Click that and write the message in the next screen. Click Send. Gary will get an email notification that he has a new personal message from you.

I just got done looking threw my copy of world encyclopedia of Knives, daggers & bayonets and this Sheffield made bowie is an example of one with a geometry similar to what I drew out with the exception of what is becoming my signature back bevel not normally found on a western knife, however, when compared to the original pattern, the original pattern had a larger bevel. however, given the second name, I plan to engrave is that of Florence Nightingale I feel the use of the Sheffield bowie a nice tribute to her and the use of the bowie a nice tribute fo Dr. Walker.

I have that book too. Are you going to do a thin guard like that one, or go with something more like the one on page 58?

well, I am going to be making a threw hidden tang so i can get a bit fancier than the examples and given that my first canister attempt gave me 3 pieces to work with I need to make another canister, lucky I have more than enough of my filler as i bought 400 scalpel heads and still have almost a full can of 4600KC. so I think I am going to make a spacer, and but plate but am not sure what style guard I am going to make.
