I need to order some leather, but am wondering what weight folks typically use on different types/sized sheaths.

All info welcome.

Steve:

I usually use 8-10 oz for the sheath and 10-12 oz for the spine. I order utility grade sides from Wickett and Craig and they run about $160 or so, depending on the size

I agree.....8-10oz....my thought pattern is why build a really nice knife, and but it in a "less then exceptional" sheath.

Another thing to keep in mind is the TYPE of leather you use. DO NOT buy the cheapest leather you can find!! That is almost always "chrome tanned", meaning the tanning process is accomplished using chromatic acids. That stuff can never be completely rinsed out, and is the very reason you will often see a knife that has been stored in the sheath....comeout with green "gunk" all over the hardware. Personally I will only use "oak tanned" or "vegetable tanned" leathers. I only purchase my leather from family ran outfits, who I've come to know and trust.
