Full Tang Damascus Handle Finishing Question

Most of the knives I make are full tang knives and I can't seem to figure out a good way to finish damascus handles on these. With normal steel what I do is attach my scales and then finish shaping and cleaning up. When I do this with damascus I ruin the etch on the outer part of the handle. Is there any good way to do this other than just getting the scales as close as possible before gluing and then just hoping I don't mess it up? Any help would be appreciated!

I screw my scales on.

Finish shaping - remove.

Treat the steel however it needs.

Epoxy the scales back on.

Not on scales. Just screws.
