I recently purchased a KMG Grinder with a 1 1/2 hp single phase motor. I have read a lot regarding variable speed motors and am in the market to purchase one. I have 110 20 amp and 220 in my shop. The 2 HP motors at KMG run on either 110 or 220 while the 3 HP runs on 220 only. So my question is do I go with the 2 HP or spend a few more dollars and get the 3 HP.

I have recently at Bill Wiggins' shop learned if you can go bigger it is better. You can always turn it down but, you can not go faster than what you have.

I am quite satisfied with my 2hp on 220. Rarely run it over 70%. Definitely go with 220.

I have a 3 phase, 2hp motor with a VFD for my KMG. My shop isn't wired with 220 outlets, so I have it plugged into 110. From everything I've heard, the 220 would run my grinder better. That being said, I have yet to have any issues with it running 110. I haven't stalled out the motor or had any other problems with it. Just my $.02 <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />.

Running 2hp on 110 only cuts it back to 1.5hp. Not much loss, but you might see a difference if the motor was less than 2hp. The 220 allows you to take full advantage of the hp.

I'm running a 2hp on 220 with a VFD. Never had any problems with power or speed. I keep the speed below 40% about 80% of the time.

Thanks for all your input. Looks like a 2HP is the way to go. Appreciate the advise.

I would agree that the 2hp 3ph with VFD is the way to go. Unless you press very hard you shouldn't ever have issue with stalling it out. I would say though to shop around. Not to try to take business from Beaumont Metal Works, Rob is an awesome guy to deal with and his grinder is top notch, but I think you can get the same motor and VFD for quite a bit less elsewhere. If you shop ebay for the VFD and go with a used 3ph motor the savings can be really significant. I am still running a 1ph because I didn't know about VFD's when I bought my motor, but I have since found 3ph VFD combinations for less than I paid for my 1ph. Good luck convincing my wife I need a new motor though.
