Struggling with octagonal bolsters on integral chef knives. I start from 1" round and typically forge my stock square before shaping the octagon on the grinder. Eyeballing the lines has been challenging. Any advice?

I would assume the blueing and a micrometer to scratch on each edge of the face has been done?

So each face of the Octagonal would be .383 and then you flatten between the lines.

Yeah. What Greg said. Doing the math and layout is necessary.

I have just been trying to eyeball it so far. I will try marking lines on the next one. What about making a template on the computer and then transferring it to a piece of thin metal stock. Slide that on tang and grind down to the template.

You could do that too, but that requires you to measure, mark, and grind the same cuts twice. Once for the template and again on the bolster. You also have to make sure the slot is perfectly aligned on the tang.

If you have a tiltable workrest you could set at 45 degrees, you could easily mark the line and watch as you grind right to it. If you don't have a tiltable workrest, I'd suggest you build a little jig that you clamp to the workrest that puts you at 45 degrees. I made one such jig for grinding the bevels in clips. You can see it here.
