I don't remember ever seeing this, my question is when forging Damascus in particular, but I will add in mono steel if I still have more forging to do (at a later time)is it necessary to thermal cycle. Here's what I've been doing mostly 1084,15n20,26c3,w-1 and 52100. After I'm done forging evenly heat to maybe 1800 and set it aside and lower my forge to 1650 (PID ribbon burner) back in even color pull out air cool, 1550 repeat then 1450. If it was San mai and wasn't done I'd add 2-1250/1300 cycles.

Thank you

Gilbert

Hello Gilbert,

If the billet will set for a while I would give it a cycle at 1450°F with those steels and then reheat to 1300°F for a cycle. All I would be concerned with is keeping things stress free until the next forging session. what you want to avoid is cooling directly from forging temps and then leaving it that way. All of your phase and structure refinement can be done at the time of blade forging.
