Good afternoon gentlemen,

I have a nice piece of Sambar that I intend to use as a handle for a Bowie. While its OK on its own, I'd like to dye it that nice red/orange and black color you get with a piece of amber Sambar. I've read about using potassium permanganate to darken the stag, but I don't see where it might be used to get that really warm look. Is this the right stuff? And if it is, how do I go about using it to get that almost fiery look I'm after?

Thanks for all the help guys.

Evan, I have tried the PP and made such a mess that I stopped. I know others have used it. But while doing it, I got more of a brown color. It looked nice though.

My best pieces have been professionally dyed. I believe the dye and the process is confidential and I am quite happy to let them "handle" that part. I'm just giving you information about my approach.

If you can figure out how to get the reds and blacks I'd like to see the results.

Lin, thank you so much for the advice.

If I remember correctly, one of the knives that I was looking at as inspiration was yours!
