Good morning gentlemen,

I have a big bowie project coming up, and i think it would look pretty sharp (pun intended) with a bold hamon pattern. But the Question I have is will 80crv2 take a hamon? And then what is the best medium to put it on with? The reason I ask about 80crv2 is because the only stock i have that can handle a knife that wide is a bar of 80crv2.

Thank you in advance for your wisdom on this.

I've used it on several knives and was not going for a hamon specifically. But it does usually show. Just not as distinct as some other steels. It's good steel. Just my experience.

Evan it is good steel for large knives. However not great for hamons. It will show a hardening line if edge quenched like 5160. It is on the border line in manganese content for hamons and the chromium content promotes deep hardening. If you are going for hamons W2 and 1095 will do much better.
